A Look at the Privacy Issues of Facebook vs Twitter

A Look at the Privacy Issues of facebook inc vs TwitterA Look at the Privacy Issues of Facebook vs TwitterFacebooks configuration of default privacy settings is geared towards invading your privacyand often forces you to share your data and your friends data if you want to use apps. Twitter is a lot less intrusive and does notlage force you to share your data, or of those you are associated with, so far. And, while Facebook uses the data it collects to target you with ads that appear on your site - ads that others can see, Twitter does not let the world know you might be interested in sex toys, losing weight, or like to listen to polka music. Twitter only tells others what you Tweet, or show in your public profile settings. Is Twitter More Secure Than Facebook? Twitter is superior to Facebook if you want to build communities comprised of total strangers without inadvertently sharing personal messages or information. In fact, the very concept of Facebook is an Orwellian platform to keep tabs on other people - where they live, check-in, where they have been, and what users like, themusic they listen to or videos viewed on other websitesand even announce your game and IQ scores. A quick look at any Facebook users timeline demonstrates how easily Facebook picks data from tags in images and field entries to tell people where you have been - from your birthplace to where you shop or had dinner with friends. It is also true with your Facebook geschftliches miteinander page. You need to carefully peruse Facebook privacy settings - and change some of them - to make sure your personal page and business page do not mix or share data. Further complicating Facebooks privacy settings- you have to decide to hide things from certain groups of people, friends, the entire world, and some information about yourself you cannot be hidden from anyone. In 2009, Facebook changed its privacy default settings to allow a substantial amount of your private information to be shared - something that remains unclear three years later, especially to novice users Our conclusion? These new privacy changes are clearly intended to push Facebook users to publicly share even more information than before, Bankston wrote. Even worse, the changes will actually reduce the amount of control that users have over some of their personal data. Source ComputerWorld.com Facebook personal and business pages are indexed by search engines. In 2011, Google developed the technology also to index Facebook comments. Twitter tweets are not indexed. While there are Facebook settings that allow you to limit who can see what, this involves thought and a plan, and there has been more than one well-publicized story about someone who was fired for Facebook status updates that were not intended for the public (boss) eyes. Here are just a few Getting Fired For What You Post On Facebook, Slate.comChilis Worker Fired For Facebook Tip Rant, HuffingtonPost.comFacebook Post Gets Trinity Broadcastin g Worker Fired, The Orange County Register25 Facebook Posts That Have Gotten People Fired, Complex.com It should, however, also be noted that Facebook is not the culprit people have also been fired for their tweets. The issue is accountability be careful what you deutsche post dhl anywhere on the Internet because nothing you say is ever truly anonymous. Many Facebook Third Party Apps Force You to Share Information Another consideration is that, depending on your Facebook privacy settings, some of your personal data may also be accessible to robots. The information spam robots collect is often used by or sold to third parties. Facebook third-party apps also glean information - information, by accepting the terms of the app, you allow them to access (or, in many cases, if you dont you cannot use their apps.) What you may not realize is that under your app settings you may be able to go in after accepting the terms and further limit access. To see what information your Facebook a pps can access, go toApps Center, My Apps You will see a list of all apps associated with your Facebook profile or business page. Click on settings for any app, and you can see what information the app accesses, and are sometimes offered options to change the settings. Twitter does not require much thought when it comes to privacy other than using your common sense. Get an account, follow people and Tweet. Subscribers will only know about you from what you Tweet and allow them to see in your master profile settings.

Budget Exercise - Financial Jargon

Budget Exercise - Financial Jargon Budget Exercise - Financial Jargon A budget exercise, also frequently called a budgetary exercise or a budgeting exercise  is a commonplace piece of corporate and financial jargon. It normally refers to an urgent expense-cutting effort, usually spurred by financial underperformance. When profits are running significantly below budgets or expectations, a crash effort to cut expenses aggressively is the normal response. Simply put, the typical company has much greater control over expenses than over revenues. Incidence Budget exercises are quite common in large, publicly-traded companies, which are concerned about the impact of short-term reported earnings on the perceptions of securities analysts and investors, and thus on their stock prices. They are less common in small privately-held companies, nonprofits, and government agencies. Frequency In some companies, budget exercises are highly predictable annual events, sometimes in the summer, sometimes in the fall, and sometimes in both time frames.  Controllers, budget department staff  and financial analysts  in companies that habitually run one or more budgetary exercises annually should note that their jobs can be especially stressful on an ongoing basis. Methodology A budget exercise frequently involves across-the-board mandates for all departments to reduce spending by a stated percentage of their budgets for the rest of the year. Sometimes these mandates also can apply to groups that have underspent their budgets to date. In companies that do this, managers are bound to develop a strong bias towards spending as much they can as early as they can in the fiscal year. Budgetary exercises typically include restrictions on new hiring. These can be either across-the-board reductions in the number of new heads that each department can add for the remainder of the year  or a complete hiring freeze. Moreover, in addition to expense cuts, budget exercises also can involve reductions to capital budgets. Job Search Impact Generally speaking, the later in the year that you seek employment at a given firm or in a given department thereof, potential budgetary impediments to being hired increase. These impediments include reaching the budgeted headcount for year-end and/or have spent on employee compensation reach a rate which, when extrapolated to year-end, will meet or exceed the full year budget. In these situations, the departments ability to hire may be severely restricted, if not suspended, for the remainder of the year. By contrast, the most fruitful period for getting hired normally is early in the year. Managers who have been budgeted additional heads may seek to add them as soon as possible before potential budget reductions or headcount freezes are imposed. For all these reasons, those seeking employment during November and December may actually have to wait until after the New Year to start work. In this case, getting the opportunity to interview late in the year often is a means to position yourself at the head of the hiring queue for the following year. Note, however, that there are many exceptions to this rule. A strategic area may be granted a special exemption to continue hiring and exceed its budget. A manager with political clout may get a special dispensation from senior executives to continue hiring. A company with a fiscal year that ends before December 31 (e.g., Morgan Stanley ends its fiscal year on November 30) may be an especially promising place to seek employment late in the calendar year  since managers will be spending and hiring out of new annual budgets then. Finally, some companies, especially those in retail, may have their busiest seasons in November and December, and thus may be hiring briskly then. In companies paying year-end bonuses, employees intending to leave often postpone their moves until soon after their bonuses are paid. This is another scenario where interviewing late in the prior year to get considered as a potential replacement can be worthwhile.

Are You an Overeager Job Candidate

Are You an Overeager Job Candidate Are You an Overeager Job Candidate 2We’ve all been there: you found a job that you really want, and in an effort to get hired, you may have let your unbridled enthusiasm get the better of you. Sure, the line between being an eager beaver job candidate (and being slightly stalker-y) can be kind of blurry sometimes. If you need some clarity to decide if you’re a tad too overeager, this list can help you figure it all out- and help you maintain your professionalism, too. Are you an overeager job candidate? Here are a few signs the answer to that question might be yes:   You’ve gotten overly social on social media. There’s nothing wrong with researching the company you’ve applied to and trying to find out as much as you can about the person you’re going to interview with. (In fact, you should be doing this!) But where it can cross the line is when your online perusing takes a more personal approach, such as trying to connect with a potential boss on his personal Facebook account, or making super friendly comments on his Instagram pics. That doesn’t mean that you should skip connecting online altogether. Ask to join the person’s LinkedIn network, and follow the company’s social media profiles- but steer clear of the personal. You’re overly chatty in conversations. Ideally, a job interview should feel like a conversation between two professionals, rather than a back-and-forth QA sesh. Thing is, when you’re trying to win over a potential boss, you might start to over-answer the questions. This can cause you to create long-winded answers when shorter, more succinct answers would do. Your answers should optimally be between 1-2 minutes max. Any longer, and you’re either over-answering the question- or not answering it at all. You’re a “yes” person- even when you shouldn’t be. During a job interview, the hiring manager rattles off a list of responsibilities that come with the job. In an effort to win favor, you answer, “I can do that!” to everything. While you might think that you’re showing your competence, you could be coming across as too eager to please. If you truly can perform all of the tasks of the position, show the hiring manager how. Offer specific examples of past work experiences, or the skills and education that you possess that directly relate to the job’s duties. You’ve crossed the line between casual and professional. Your interviewer signs on a few minutes late to your video interview and apologetically explains that she had to take her kids to daycare. In turn, you respond, “Just this morning, my two-year-old was puking on the floor.” While you might feel like you’re having a cool bonding moment with your soon-to-be boss, it could appear that you’re too overeager to establish a personal connection. Even if your interviewer is casual, you still need to be as professional as possible during the interview. You’ve popped up at the office- unannounced. About a week after your job interview with an employer who seemed very interested in you, you suddenly realize that you forgot to submit the latest copy of your resume. No worries, you think, you’ll just drop it off quickly at the office (and sniff around to see if they’ve come to any hiring decisions yet). Think twice before you approach an employer’s office unannounced, though. Interviewers rarely appreciate unscheduled drop-ins. Instead of using an excuse to go back to the office, follow up with the employer via email. Reiterate how much you enjoyed meeting him, update him on any new relevant information (like if you got a new license or certification), and that you’re available should he have any post-interview follow-up questions. That way, you’ll look less overeager- and much more professional. Know someone looking for a job? Refer a friend to with this link- you’ll get a month free service and they’ll get 30% off!

Before You Hit Send Follow these Tips to Get Your Resume Read

Before You Hit Send Follow these Tips to Get Your Resume Read Before You Hit Send Follow these Tips to Get Your Resume Read Finding that perfect job opportunity doesn’t come around very often for many, and when it does, excitement can take over and cloud the ability to stay focused on the best version of your resume. “The main purpose of a resume is to get contacted,” says Mary Kate Robinson, career services director at  The Art Institute of Houston. “Be sure to have your key ‘do’s’ first including rank/order, your experience, appropriate duties and accomplishments, correct spelling and grammar, and evidence of your knowledge, skills and abilities.” Before you hit send on that application for your dream job, here are five not-so-obvious don’ts from career service directors from The Art Institutes International Minnesota and The Art Institute of Houston. 1. Don’t have conflicting information on your resume and your LinkedIn profile. Take the time to be certain that what is stated on your LinkedIn profile matches the resume you are sending. “Employers are doing their homework, and you don’t want to waste valuable interview time correcting facts or explaining discrepancies,” says Robinson. 2. Don’t use the same action verb. The thesaurus is not a dinosaur and it is not extinct. Avoid using responsible for over and over again. Switch it up. Use other action verbs such as created, delivered, designed, in addition to responsible for. 3. Don’t get grandiose with your accomplishments. In other words, stick to the facts. “I often correct recent graduates on the terms highly experienced or extensive knowledge,” says Becky Bates, career services director at  The Art Institutes International Minnesota. “Unless you have a proven track record and have high credibility in a specific industry among colleagues, you shouldn’t be using those terms; and even then, your examples should speak to your knowledge, skills and abilities.” 4. Don’t overly promote your soft skills on your resume. “Employers ask for your resume and a cover letter for a reason,” says Bates. Keep your soft skills on the cover letter and leave the hard skills for the resume. Your cover letter should be the place where you express interest in the job, then tell them how your hard skills on your resume correspond to the specific position you are applying for, and lastly, you ask for the interview. 5. Don’t turn your resume into a laundry list. Resumes are supposed to tell stories, Bates says. “Resume reviewers only spend about five-to-seven seconds on a resume before they decide whether or not they want to continue reading.” Start your resume with a summary or objective, an introduction of sorts. The next information on your resume should tell the reviewer why you are qualified for the job. But Bates cautions that you should begin with your strongest point depending on where you are in your career. If you just graduated from college, your education is your strongest point, and so your education should be listed first, said Bates. “If you’ve had 6-to-10 years of experience in an industry, the fact that you worked at McDonald’s should go last.” Today’s employers and gate keepers including recruiters and human resources are conducting thorough searches, and no longer solely relying on a list of experiences. The more holistic presentation you provide of yourself as a professional, the better chances you’ll have in rising above the competition. Source:  artinstitutes.edu.

The Mighty OctoKong

The Mighty OctoKong The Mighty OctoKong The Mighty Octo-Kong Chinas pell-mell rush to development is producing many of the worlds largest and most expensive infrastructure and building projects ever conceived. From the 21,000-MW Three Gorges Dam to Beijings landmark CCTV building, Chinese projects are stretching the boundaries of design and the machines needed to construct them. To build the $10.7-billion link connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau in South Chinas Pearl River Delta, project officials needed more than one of the worlds most powerful pile drivers to push mammoth 72-foot-diameter steel piles. They needed eight of them, linked together and synchronized as one unit. Dubbed the Octo-Kong, the device connects eight vibratory pile drivers each driven by their own CAT 1,200-hp engine. The hammers are structurally, mechanically, and hydraulically connected to provide enough force to drive 120 of the giant 130-foot-long piles, each weighing 600 metric tons. Project officials say the piles are the largest ever driven. Octo-Kong uses eight of the worlds most powerful vibratory hammers to work as one unit. Image: American Piledriving Equipment Inc. Working for bridge contractor First Harbour Marine Group China, U.S. equipment manufacturer American Piledriving Equipment Inc. (APE) built on previous work to devise the powerful hammer, says David White, managing director of APEs China office and manufacturing facility in Shanghai. APE had already linked four APE 600 pile drivers to drive 44-foot-diameter steel pipe in China. This was a progression, really, he says. It didnt come out of the blue. Breaking New Ground In an innovation in cofferdam construction, the piles form bulkheads for two artificial islands that are transition structures between the links 4.2-mile-long tunnel and three cable-stayed bridges that will connect Hong Kong to Macau and Zhuhai, on the Chinese mainland. The tunnel will allow deep-water ships to pass from the South China Sea to the delta. The multi-unit vibratory hammer begins to drive a giant steel pile. Image: American Piledriving Equipment Inc. The biggest risk was in [the Octo-Kong] getting out of sync, says White. If you let it get out of sync, theres just a lot of force working in the wrong direction. Working at sea, the giant vibratory hammer is hung from a barge-mounted crane. The hammer is fitted to the top of the pile and lifted into position. Because of its enormous size, the pile sinks into the seabed under its own weight, but only to a point. Then the hammer takes over (see video of the process). Vibratory hammers work by doing exactly that: vibrating in an up-and-down movement at very high frequencies. Rubber suppressors mounted on top of the gearbox dampen the vibration to the crane line. Standard hammer pile drivers pound the piles into the ground. Vibratory hammers work faster and quieter. Working Together The key is that this has to be thought of as one unit, says White of the eight-hammer configuration. Pressure had to be equal at all times on all of the hydraulic motors, so you have to connect it as one circuit. Precision in operation was paramount. White says there is only 1/300th of a second margin of error. Anything more and the pile driver will be out of synchronization. APE designed the multi-unit hammer with mechanical as well as hydraulic connection to account for startup and shut down operations. Theyre linked mechanically through a shaft to keep the machine in time during startup and shutdown, he notes. Its hard to get equal hydraulic flow over eight units so the mechanical connection can be used to overcome that [at startup] until the hydraulics kick in. And as soon as you shut the machine off, theres no hydraulic oil being pumped, so the switch to mechanical smooths things out. White and APE drove the last of the piles in December 2011 after driving the first In April. They shaved seven months off of the construction schedule with their blistering pace, proving their method. Driven piles form the perimeter of a seawall for an artificial island. Image: American Piledriving Equipment Inc. The artificial islands seawalls each comprise 60 individual adjoining cells, each adjoined by wingwalls, in order to form to perimeter of the island. Traditional construction methods of the bulkheads would have taken years, with each cell having to be fabricated individually by driving one interlocking sheet pile at a time to form each cell, and each cell constructed to adjoin the next until the island wall perimeter was closed. A construction method driving the cells as individual massive steel piles had never been tried on this scale in these conditions. Timing Is Everything APE relied on Excel Gear Inc., Roscoe, IL, to manufacture the gearboxes in just 10 weeks. They are the most critical component because they regulate the timing on the vibratory power transmission. The unit is designed to rely on the precision of the gears, so timing of the gearboxes was critical, especially in achieving the timing specification of 0.005 inch. White says the biggest learning curve was in operating the machine, and driving such a large pile to such tight tolerances in differing soils. With something this large, if one side of the pile enters a type of soil before the other, there is a tendency for the pile to lean toward the soil that is softer, he says. In most jobs, the method of correction is to lift the pile up and start again. That wasnt possible on this job because of the size and working from a barge. When you pull up, the barge tends to go down, so pulling is not an option on the water. The challenge was in not ever going through one soil type. The key is that this has to be thought of as one unit. Pressure had to be equal at all times on all the hydraulic motors so you have to connect it as one circuit.Dan White, American Piledriving Equipment Inc.

How to Make Your Boring Job Exciting Again-The Muse

How to Make Your Boring Job Exciting Again-The Muse How to Make Your Boring Job Exciting Again Let’s say you love your company and you love your co-workers, but you no longer love your job. At least not as much as you used to back when you first started and everything was fresh. More often than not, your day-to-day’s starting to feel pretty stale. It happens. And while you should probably start thinking about what’s next, you should also take a few steps to revitalize your current role and make it all feel exciting again. After all, work shouldn’t make you want to fall asleep. 1. Create a New Project Start by identifying a process that can be changed or a problem that can be fixed. Is there something you’ve been doing the same way forever (because, “that’s the way it’s done around here”) that could be optimized? Once you have an idea, pitch it to your manager and ask to spearhead the project. You’ll enjoy the challenge of developing and executing something new. Even if there isn’t a dire need for what you’re working on at the time, people will be impressed that you took initiative. 2. Take on Additional Responsibilities Not looking to reinvent the wheel? If you don’t have the resources to plan your own project, volunteer to lend a hand on an existing initiative or add a new responsibility to your role. If you want more work to mix things up, but aren’t sure how to manage it with your schedule, steal this trick from my super-productive colleague. She told me that she wakes up earlier than usual one day a week to complete work that excites her. This routine allows her to take on new assignments and spend more time brainstorming projects and initiatives. Consider the possible career benefits next time you’re tempted to hit snooze for the second (OK, fourth) time. 3. Learn New Skills There are so many online and offline resources for learning new skills. You may find out that you’re passionate about graphic design, writing, public speaking, or something else entirely. Take ownership of your education and use your newfound skills to either take on additional responsibilities at work or enhance what you already do. 4. Ask for a Promotion Don’t expect that your boss will give you a promotion in the regular course of business- you often times have to bring it up. So, if you’re due for an annual review, you should schedule a meeting with your manager. Yes, directly asking for a raise or negotiating benefits can be uncomfortable, but it’s worthwhile. The best-case is that you end up getting what you want. The worst-case is that you don’t get more money or benefits, but you do hone your self-advocacy skills. Related: 8 Things to Know Before Asking for a Raise 5. Network (at Work) Networking isn’t just important when you’re looking for a job. You can learn from other people’s paths and insights at every stage of your career. Invite a co-worker you don’t regularly interact with to go to lunch or coffee. Getting to know your colleagues better will help you feel like you’ve had a new start (without having to learn names and titles all over again). Plus, you might make a few new friends- and that always makes the workday more enjoyable. 6. Drain the Swamp Kate White, Muse contributor, former Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, and the author of I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This: How to Ask for the Money, Snag the Promotion, and Create the Career You Deserve, writes about the value of “draining the swamp.” She’s referring to the fact that people sometimes get so busy doing their jobs that they don’t think about the big picture and their future. White recommends scheduling one hour every week to drain the swamp. This includes reaching out to mentors and sponsors, going to networking events, and thinking about your ideal career trajectory. Create an action plan and follow it to focus on the skills and practices that will help you develop the career you want at your current job. 7. Go Above and Beyond Make your career feel new again by being bolder. White also writes that you can’t just do your job description- you have to go above and beyond if you want to stand out and succeed. She recommends that you ask yourself, “When was the last time I made my boss say ‘wow?’ In order to enliven your job, cover the four B’s: ‘Can I be bolder, bigger, better, or more badass?’” For example, if you work in marketing, come up with an innovative idea for a client- and then pitch it. They’ll be impressed by your big idea, and you’ll get to come up with a new strategy. It’s totally normal for the excitement of a job to wane over time. But, it’s up to you, to seek out and create new opportunities that’ll make it fun again. And hey, you may learn more (and earn more) as a result.

Sample Resumes That Work

Sample Resumes That Work Sample Resumes That Work We’ve all heard the sage writing advice that you should be able to pitch your story to a potential publisher within a 14-second elevator ride.  Well, it turns out that selling your personal story is much the same.  Instead of a verbal description, however, candidates pitch their expertise and skills through the use of a professional, well-drafted resume.   Your first and best chance at landing the in-person interview, a well-formated, brief and appropriately tailored resume can make or break your career chances.  Describing the qualities of a winning resume is one thing, but showing you is another.  Here we break down sample resumes that work to get you working! Resumes for New Graduates One of the biggest resume hurdles for new graduates is the lack of real-world experience.  Just because you don’t have a ten-year career in your chosen field, though, doesn’t mean your resume can’t be chock full of useful info. For entry level or recent grad resumes, consider leading off with a brief 2-3 sentence description of your personality, skills, and career goals.  This will help fill up a little space that may otherwise be lacking.  Be sure to include education and school accolades that may be relevant such as speaking or writing awards.  Finally, those high school or college internships may not have paid but they can pay off for relevant experience.  Check out this example of a perfectly crafted new graduate resume for inspiration in crafting your own cv. Resumes for Early Careers Your early career resume may closely resemble that of a recent grad with the addition of a bit of relevant job experience.  With this in mind, your initial summary should be shortened to a sentence or two in order to accommodate relevant job positions. Since you’re further out of your school days, move this section towards the middle or the end of the resume, after the current and past work history.  If you’ve gained any advanced certifications in your prior roles, be sure to list those to beef up your relevant credentials.  Need some more inspiration?  Check out this sample resume, perfect for those just starting out. Resumes for the Mid-Career Mid-career is definitely the sweet-spot when it comes to a candidate’s hire-ability.  At this stage, you most likely have several years, and possibly even positions, worth of job experience and relevant skills.  Highlight this information front and center, pulling out the most critical details that match up with the given job description. Mid-career resumes should consider ditching that GPA or any education level awards.  Absent graduation honors such as cum laude or magna cum laude, a list of your relevant schools and degrees obtained will be sufficient for this field.  If you have plenty of experience, feel free to branch out into the two-page territory as well, like this candidate did.  Often a no-no for newly minted grads, mid-career level positions may need an additional listing of relevant positions to prevent your bonafides. Resumes for the Late-Career If you’ve managed to work your entire career towards that senior management level position, congrats.  You’re in the golden land of opportunities.  With this much relevant job experience under your belt, late-career applicants should expect their resumes to be two-three pages in length with detailed descriptions of prior managerial experience.   Consider including a cover letter with your resume submission, even if the position doesn’t require one.  Much like an entry-level resume, this bookend version later in your career should have plenty of descriptions of you as a candidate in order to perfectly spell out just what you bring to the job-experience table.  Look no further for a late-career example than right here.   Whatever your career stage, remember to have several friends or professional colleagues give your CV the once over, prior to sending the show on the road.  Use our examples, or others you may find, to tailor your resume to not only the position but also your career level.  Taking these steps will score you big points and put you that much closer to landing the job.
